Businesses and Investors

In September 2022, businesses including the John Lewis Partnership, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Twinings, Aviva, Asos, Primark and the British Retail Consortium called on the Government to “urgently bring forward” a new UK law. The statement, published via the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre, says that a new law must ensure that human rights and environmental due diligence is carried out “to a high standard and that victims have access to justice”.

UK investors representing more than £4.5 trillion in assets under management, including Abdrn, Legal & General and CCLA, released a statement via the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre in August 2022. It says that businesses “should be held legally liable for harm, loss and damage arising from their failure to prevent adverse human rights and environmental impacts within their operations and throughout their global value chains”, adding that they should be “required to adequately compensate victims of abuse”.
